| What we are experiencing now in international test cricket, with the aftermath of the ball tampering debacle, is the single most important issue that test cricket has ever had to deal with. The repercussions of which are likely to affect not just cricket teams, but also the rules and regulations of the game, future tours to the sub-continent and also the political and social relationships between the UK and Pakistan, which lets face it, are already strained.
Call me old fashioned, but isn’t “ball tampering” part of the game? The ICC need to get rid of their holier-than-thou stance on this and realise that cricketers from all over the world are using certain tricks to enhance the ball, some are using saliva, fresh with gum or breath mint chemicals and others have different tricks up their sleeve. Is the ICC prepared to name and shame all of those players? If they are, they have to be very careful about the way that they do it; international sport these days involves a diplomatic process.
However, my theory is that it is only officially tampering if it’s a Pakistani, or, lets be more specific here, a NON WHITE player. I agree with Inzamam on the initial protest, I think that they (Pakistan) have been through enough recently. The Shahid Afridi incident last year, which was a blatant example of cheating, seemed to have honestly galvanised the team and I’m sure that going backwards was not their intention. The label of “cheaters” must certainly be a heavy burden. I do think though, that they should have returned to the field without forfeiting the match, although I’m not so sure they were aware that was the consequence, that is certainly what Inzy has indicated in an interview today.
These are just my thoughts of course, most of you probably disagree with me. A few more questions to pose: What if you were at the game, would you have been annoyed at the game being forfeited?
Or, do you think that Pakistan have only got themselves to blame for initially refusing to come back out onto the field? | |
