| Broad to seek McGrath for advice
Bowlers Stuart Broad and Glenn McGrath - separated by 16 years
Young England bowler Stuart Broad wants to approach Australian veteran Glenn McGrath for advice during the Ashes. Broad flies out to Perth next week with England's Academy - which will provide injury cover to the Test squad. And the 20-year-old rookie said: "He's certainly a role model for me and I'd love to pick up some of his ideas." McGrath, 36, has 136 Ashes wickets to his name. Broad made his England debut against Pakistan in August, playing in the five one-day internationals. The highly-rated Leicestershire fast bowler also played in a single Twenty20 international but has not yet played in Test cricket.
It's not nice in international cricket, it's a battle
Stuart Broad
His father Chris was a hero last time England won the Ashes in Australia, in 1986-87. Broad Jr said: "It would be great, if I got the chance this winter, to have a chat with [McGrath] before he gives it up. "I'd love to have a word with because he's exactly what I model myself on. He's a great bowler I try to emulate. "He started bowling at a late age and I'd love to be able to follow the way he has run his career, not just his bowling but his fitness and his training." Barely two years out of school, Broad says he feels no apprehension at playing a role in the eagerly-awaited upcoming series. He said: "I'm not afraid of anything. It doesn't matter who I'm bowling at. Whether it's the County Championship, a one-day international, whatever - it's me against him. "It's not nice in international cricket. It's a battle, just like it's always a battle for me, even when I'm playing domestic cricket for Leicestershire." | |
