| I ask you, since Michael Vaughan left, what has Fletcher done to protect the high morale present after the Ashes win? Nothing, as far as I can see. For a team that has had such success, England now seem shockingly demotivated, uninterested and unhappy. Fletcher has allowed, among others, Trescothick, Harmison, Strauss and now Kevin Pietersen to totally lose form and even interest at points over the last year. It is likey that we might play several out of form, desperately struggling players in the Ashes, if, as Fletcher suggested this morning, Steve Harmison's place is not under threat. since 2004, Harmison has had two good games - Lords vs Aus 2005, OT vs Pak 2006. In this period he averages 33.40 with the ball for England, in test matches - although he did trouble the Aussies in the ICC world XI match, his form across a long period of time hardly merits automatic inclusion. Anderson and Mahmood both troubled the Aussies more in the icc CT. Even worse is the selection of Geraint Jones over Chris Read. Not only is the logic flawed (Read has three scores over thirty in his last three test innings; Jones only one in his last 14) but the execution of the decision is appalling - Read not given a chance to prove himself on tour, Jones back in having done nothing since being dropped. It smacks of favouritism. Performance seems to be irrelevant. The message sent out to young, impressionable cricketers such as Panesar, Anderson, Bell and Mahmood over the past year, by Fletcher's refusal to drop old friends regardless of form, is a very demoralising one. It has become clear that the Ashes win was orchetrated by Vaughan and Cooley, not Fletcher. Time for a change, in my opinion | |
