| "Dickie Bird: You're a legend!" That was Merv Hughes' assessment of the best-known umpire in the world.
His white cap, twitching shoulders and forearm stretch became as much a part of the day out as the battle between bat and ball. He seemed to attract minor incident, without ever allowing the day to be soured by controversy. Burst pipes, reflecting windscreens and bomb scares all conspired to trouble him, but each impostor was met with humour and Yorkshire-bred common sense. Notorious for being an early Bird (he once made it to The Oval at 6am, so nervous was he about being late and was five-hours early to meet the Queen on one occasion), and plagued by bad weather he made the transition from cricketing figure to something close to a national institution.
A favourite among the public who took to his idiosyncrasies, Bird was equally admired and respected by the players. He diffused many a situation that a lesser umpire may have allowed to escalate, typically with common sense and good humour. Most importantly, he simply made few mistakes. "They all rated me the best: Sobers, Richards, Lillee and Botham. That means a lot I can tell you," he admitted. | |

| The most famous umpire in the history of test cricket, best selling author (albeit for his autobiography), professional chat show guest, after dinner speaker and motivational guru. You name it and Harold Dennis Bird has done it. Born in Yorkshire in 1933, Dickie, as he is better known, grew up with a bat in his hand. Dickie never let bowlers intimidate him. Here he "has words" with Curtly Ambrose and Kenny Benjamin. In 1956 a youth spent hitting a leather ball rather than the schoolbooks paid off when his home county signed him up.In this period Yorkshire were very much the Manchester United of the County circuit, almost untouchable. There was fierce competition for places and as such Dickie's playing career was not what it might have been and his playing days left a first class average of only 20. After retiring in 1964 Bird took to learning more about the game through coaching and officiating. His ascent to the cricketing hall of fame was set in motion in 1973 when he umpired his first test match. As befits a man whose career was as much cabaret as it was professional, there was a bomb scare and the debutante umpire, nerves jangling, was swiftly joined on the pitch by several thousand panicking fans. Dickie was as sad to retire from cricket as fans were to see him go.Whatever trials were thrown his way, Dickie was a character who added richly to any game. After all, who else could ever have claimed to have made the decision that ‘good light stopped play’ (as happened at one home test where there was a glare from the sun distracting the players). On top of this, though, he was probably as good a judge of a decision as ever there has been, respected universally by players and fans, Dickie was - and is - a legend of the game. | |
