| England legend Ian Botham has backed calls for the famous Ashes urn to remain on Australian soil. Sir Richard Branson, whose Virgin crew took the urn over to Australia, said he was "uncomfortable" taking it back. Botham, a member of the last England team to win down under, added: "This is only promoting the game. The winners of the Ashes should hold the Ashes." The MCC ruled out such a move and said: "The urn was never intended to be the trophy for the cricket series." The urn has been seen by thousands of cricket followers across Australia, having travelled to six different cities as part of a tour to coincide with this winter's Ashes series. On the 1882-83 Australia tour, it is believed a group of women from Melbourne presented the urn to the then England captain Ivo Bligh, one of whom later became his wife, Florence.
"It was Ivo's wish that it be bequeathed to the MCC - and Florence carried out that last wish," an MCC spokesman said. "The urn will return to Lord's after the exhibition tour finishes at the end of January. The crystal Ashes trophy will be presented at the end of the current Test and will remain in Australia until the next Ashes series." Botham, famous for his heroic displays against Australia in the memorable 1981 Ashes series, said: "The reaction to the exhibition over here has been amazing. It creates interest and, I hope, will get more people playing cricket.
The England hero rejected suggestions the urn was too fragile to be moved around in future years. "In this day and age we've got the technology," he said. "It's here now and it's been around Australia. "This has been going on for as long as I can remember - why should the Ashes stay in England - and it's a fair point." | |
